The Son of Man

Our new series 'Questions from the Gospels' is starting with two weeks looking at questions related to Jesus' identity. Last Sunday we looked at Matthew 16:13-20 and Jesus' question to his disciples, 'who do you say I am?'

Before asking the disciples this question he asked them, 'who do poeple say the Son of Man is?'

Following Jesus' second question, Peter answered that Jesus was 'the Messiah, the Son of the living God'. From Jesus' response this is clearly the 'right' answer - but Jesus then orders the disciples not to tell anyone that he is the Messiah.

When you read the rest of the New Testament Jesus is consistently referred to as the Messiah (Hebrew) or Christ (Greek) - both words mean 'the anointed one'. And yet this is something he hardly ever calls himself. His favourite title for himself is 'Son of Man'. But what does this mean?

If you want to explore this theme further The Bible Project team have started a new Podcast Series on the Son of Man. The first episode became available today. This series of podcasts are the basis on which their Son of Man video is based.

You'll find the podcast here.
